Christmas Poem

Christmas, the time of family and gifts.
Trees wearing lights like scarves.
Stars on the top of their heads like shimmering hats.
Artificial snowmen hanging from them like earrings.

Reading Christmas stories for them to imagine movies
Of the Grinch and his journey in the snow of icing sugar.
Pohutukawa and their reaching fingers, longing to be chosen for a BBQ.
Knowing the true meaning of a warm NZ Christmas.

Poem

Poems are movies you can’t watch.
You can see everything so vivid,
Yet it’s like a dream world.
And everyone has their own world.

My sky is a warm cotton blue blanket.
My moon is a cheese eaten by mice.
My mud is melted chocolate in a brown bowl.
My birds are paper planes gliding up, and down.

Your sky could be a mixture of cotton candy and blue fizzy.
Your moon could be a banana punctured by needles.
Your mud could be chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce.
And your birds could be knives slicing through hard winds.

Silver
☝☝☝☝☝

Silver,
The colour of a knight in glistening armour,
Ready to save maidens,
Hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Silver,
The colour of spoons in a warm, cosy kitchen,
Scooping up ice cream from porcelain bowls,
Filling up my hungry stomach.

Silver,
The colour of a cage holding back a foul beast,
Ready to rip anything to shreds,
Banging against the unbreakable bars.

Silver,
The colour of a tank made for war,
Gun at the ready to blow up soldiers,
And you will always know it will take a hit.

And finally, a sword, main weapon,
For a knight.

Blue

The ocean,
Shimmering bright and miles to explore,
Like stars shining in the vast
Night sky.

A water balloon,
Exploding as it collides with a friends bare chest,
Droplets of water flying free
Only to land on burning concrete.

A blue t-shirt,
Flapping in the wind,
Trying ever so hard to break free
After being wet from a fierce water battle.

Tears,
Created by sadness and loss,
Rolling down cheeks
Like rivers of sorrow.

And finally, the sky,
Infinity and beyond.

Blue.

Myth about Earthquakes

Earthquakes are strange things. They cause the ground underneath us to move, but for what reason? Why do they make the ground shake? Why do they happen? You may find my myth interesting, or a bit disturbing. Please go with the first one.

All of you must know Papatuanuku, the Mother Earth, right? This myth is mostly about her. This happened after Papatuanuku and Ranginui were separated. While Ranginui was crying and created rain, Papatuanuku was suffering pain. And not just by heartbreak. She was pregnant. Of course, she can have babies whenever she wants because she is the goddess of the world.

Her pain parted the land. She shuddered and screamed. This went on for only minutes. She had babies all over the land. She called all of them the Maungas. Many in the center of Te Ika a Maui (North Island) and Te Waka Pounamu (South Island). The Maori called the shakes kumekume a Ruaumoko (a bit of a mouthful) a.k.a earthquakes.

How Snails Got There Shells.

Do you ever wonder where snails got their shells? They are small insects (that can be big), and hermaphrodites, which are both boys and girls. They are slimy, and only walk on one foot! This is my story about how snails got their shell.

Once upon a time, 2,000 years ago, there were no snails. Only  slugs. They were the weakest of prey. The birds could see them a mile away (meaning of speech). They had no defence at night and no shelter. They were dying out quickly. By 16 A.D, there were 5 million slugs. By 17 A.D, there were 2 million slugs. By 18 A.D, there were 5 hundred thousand slugs left. On 20 A.D, there were only a few hundred left.

There was a plant called the Curling Stalk. It was like a koru, but the roots were coming out at around the neck. They were weeds. They killed other plants to take the water and to reproduce. People decided to kill all of the Curling Stalks because they were destroying their food. They cut the head off of the plant right under the roots and left the head there to rot.

A slug called Ngata was wondering around, when suddenly, a bird was screeching above him. He looked for some shelter to hide in, and he saw a Curling Stalk head. He ate the inside and curled up inside. After a few minutes, he heard the screeching fading away. He poked out his head and saw that the coast was clear. He tried to climb out, but it was too tight. It stayed on him. He decided to walk back and show his friends. Some of them thought it was a good idea, and some of them thought it was a terrible idea. They stayed as slugs. People called the new creatures snails.

How Kapiti Island Came To Be

Have you ever wondered how Kapiti Island was made? Well, let me tell you. But first things first. I need to describe the island. It is a beautiful island of nature and native birds. And you when you live in Waikanae, it looks like a man lying down with a blanket over him. Now let's get on with the story.

Once, there was a huge giant. He was a Maori Giant. No one knew what his name was, but he was very unusual. His father was a giant and his mother was a normal person. He lived in a tribe called the Ngati Poneke.

He made friends with many children in the Ngati Poneke. But the parents did not trust him. They thought of a way to get rid of him. They asked a nearby tribe called the Te Ati Awa to see if they can kill him.

What the Ngati Poneke didn't know was that the Te Ati Awa were looking for land. They didn't have enough land to plant food. The Ngati Poneke had lots of land and lots of food, so the Te Ati Awa decided to trick the Ngati Poneke. The Te Ati Awa will kill them instead. They decided to attack the next day.

The Te Ati Awa were surprised that the Ngati Poneke had such amazing warriors. The Ngati Poneke were fighting valiantly and were filled with determination. They were beating the battle. The only unlucky bit was that sadly, the giant's mum was killed in the battle. The giant was extremely upset. His mother died, The parents from the Ngati Poneke did not want him. He wandered out to sea and cried. He weaved a blanket while he was crying and he finally made one big enough to wear. He pulled the blanket over him so the world wouldn't see him. He cried so much, he turned to stone.

The children were also mortified. They decided to call the giant stone, Kapiti Island. And that was how Kapiti Island came to be.

How Sand Was Made

This is a made up myth, so I don’t know what culture it would be in, but this starts with the goddess of water, Aguac, and the god of land, Tierres.

There were rocks on the shores, rocks in the water, and rocks which form islands. Aguac wasn’t really happy that Tierres was putting his land in her ocean. They had an enormous argument.
“Rocks should be there so people who swim can actually stand on it!” said Tierres.
“Yeah, but your turf is in my area! It’s an ocean! Not a landcean!” argued Aguac.

This went on for days and days. The humans near the coast had the worst of luck. Then one day, a brave girl had enough of the bickering. Her name was Layla.
“Stop fighting. Just ground the rocks into smaller rocks but they are much easier to carry and people can still call it an ocean and people can actually walk on things. Seriously, it’s that simple!” said Layla.

They both agreed to her idea, so Tierres cracked most rocks of the world to create sand for the ocean. Aguac let Tierres have islands in her ocean and they were friends again. For now.

Soldier’s  Warfare

“Guys! Get under cover!” yelled Jack. Gun fire was whizzing past our heads. Most of their comrades were still shooting at the enemy.
“There are too many! GET DOWN!!!” shouted Jack.
“AAAAAGH!!!”. A man had 3 bullet holes through his helmet and head. He laid there motionless.
“We need more ammo!” yelled Paul.
“No, we don’t. We need more men to survive!” replied Jack. Two more men were shot down.
“Keep on fighting, men! GRENADE!!!” yelled the general. The battle in Austria was a massacre. The 1940’s were horrible times for war. Shells, gas, guns and bullets, all of them created chaos. Spitfires & Messerschmitt were shooting each other down, which crashed into the battle field.
Most of it was too much for some soldiers. But not Jack. He was a really bad fighter. He cared for his comrades. He did not care about how much a bad mo they have. He cared for how many lives were at stake, friend or foe. This war started at a game of chess. Yes, a game of chess. The competitors were the Queen of England and the Emperor of Austria. The Queen of England won, but at that time, the Emperor was an extremely sore loser. He declared war toward the Queen. She knew her forces would win, But it was quite even in this war.

At the base, Jack and Paul were thinking of a plan.
“These Austrians are too strong to attack head on. They have the weaponry, ammo and men.” said Paul.
“But they are completely defenceless from the back. The Emperor is horrible at defence. Probably why he lost at the game of chess.” said Jack. They talked till 2200 and in the morning, they told the general their plan.
“This strategy might actually work. Where will we get all of these materials though?” asked the general.
“I saw a village a few kilometres back. We can get enough resources in about 3 hours.” answered Paul.

The next morning, they placed scarecrows down on the ground at 0330. They put guns and uniforms on them to make them look like soldiers. Then they connected string to each of the triggers, so one soldier can pull the string and they act as the are shooting. In two hours, the Austrians woke up and saw many men pointing their guns at their direction.
“FIRE AT WILL!” yelled the Austrian general. The men started shooting down the “soldiers”, and the “soldiers” started shooting at them. Surprisingly, none of them fell down and they killed 20 people at the most.
“They are invincible!” yelled some Austrian soldiers. They were not expecting dozens of soldiers coming from behind, killing them with knives and guns. After a few minutes, nearly all Austrians were dead, and the survivors were taken hostage. Jack and Paul were declared heroes.

Today I learnt...PIE EDITION! yum !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who made the first pie. Pie first started in ancient Egypt. The first pies were made by some Romans who probably learned about it from the Greeks. These pies were usually  made in "reeds" which were used for the purpose of holding the thing inside and not for eating with the filling.

Tween's Life

This story is about a tween called Liam. That is me. I had a horrible tween life. I'm now 37 years old but that's not the point. This was 27 years ago but I remember it like it was 27 minutes. Let's I didn't forget anything. This started 30th June on a Saturday.

I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mum came into my room and said,
"Good news, Liam. Your grandma and grandpa are coming to stay here for two weeks."
"NOOOO!!!" I thought. My grandparents were so weird. Whenever my friends came over, they did face-paint to look like famous DC Super-villains like the Joker. My grandma was horrible at cooking, but she compared herself to Gordon Ramsey. Grandpa was a sore loser and he believed he was a pro wrestler. My. God. Please tell me if you have weirder grandparents.

Those were the school holidays, but that didn't change the weirdness. I asked my mum to go my best friend's house and surprisingly, she said yes. She was probably also sick of the smelly stench of weirdness. I went to my best friend, Jax's, house. He has all a good friend needs. We talked and joked and played on the consoles. I would never do that in my age. Okay, I do it sometimes but come on.

When I had to go back, I was surprised to see so many decorations and nearly all my friends and family.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" yelled everyone. I was standing there agape, looking at what they have done for me. Even grandma and grandpa were there, but this time as my favourite Super-villain, Death-stroke. That made me so happy I literally fainted. After what felt like days, I woke up. I was in my room. I looked at my watch, and it said it was the 30th June on a Saturday. But that can't be. That was yesterday! Unless...
"Good news, Liam. Your report card is coming in a few hours and remember. If they are bad grades, you go do some homework for 3 hours as you promised." said my mum.
"Ughhhhh." was all I said. This was going to be the worst day ever.
Today I learnt...

Which animals sleeps the most. It is the koala, who sleeps 22 hours a day. Then it is the sloth (20 hours), armadillo and opossum (which are at 19 hours each), lemur (16 hours), then hamster and squirrel (tied at 14 hours each). All these animals are really heavy sleepers. Note that all of them are mammals.

One paper manufacturer states that a cord of wood measuring 1.2 x 1.2 x 2.4 metres or 128 cubic feet makes around nearly 90,000 sheets of bond-quality paper! The House On The Top Of The Hill

Age: Any that can read proper sentences
Rating: */5

Benjamin Boggle didn't like boys because they were too noisy. He didn't like girls because they were too giggly. And he despised adults because they told him what to do. He had animals to give him food and a drink and plants to give him fruit. He was all good up in the top of the hill. He doesn't like the village at all.

The chimney was crooked, the roof looked like it was sliding off and the house leaned in like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It leaned wherever the wind blew so it was rocking side to side. The story is funny in some pages and the ending is extremely kind. The people care for him when his house broke down from extremely strong winds and now he is the happiest man on earth.

Best Choice For Country Visiting
(In my opinion.)

This persuasive writing is about which country I should go to. Many people would go to beautiful islands but as it says on the title, it is my opinion. If any of you know me right now, my choice would be...

Argentina. This place is both warm and cold. Filled with beautiful plants and amazing foods. Honestly, after you finish reading this, copy and paste this word, "alfajores". These are the best chocolates in the universe.

You have to speak fluent Spanish, but you can understand some words (even though they won't understand yours). There are a few mosquitoes here and there, but at the very south of Argentina, you get to see... penguins. They are called the Magellanic Penguin. The have a black head and a white ring just after the eyes. But be aware in of your surroundings because there are some dangerous animals like pumas a.k.a mountain lions.

In Argentina, at night, you can hear owls in the night. When I went there 5 years ago and I was at my Granddad and Grandma's, I heard a call of an owl. It soothed my doubts and helped me relax and go to sleep. Most houses have a lot of insects that can irritate you, but most houses have Hummingbirds coming to their flowers and have pools for hot days (which is nearly everyday). Good museums for Argentinian culture, cool places to eat and of course, lots of ice cream shops. Some Argentinians have 3 scoops and say, "This is not enough.". Spanish, of course.

For these reasons, I hope you will go to Argentina and see the beautiful landscapes. And please stay safe and tell me if I convinced you. If I didn't, tell me what country you would go to. I liked showing what Argentina can show and how it does it so well. Please copy and paste the word "Calchaqui Valley", and you will see the beauties of  Argentina. Luckily, I'm going next year. Then I will get to meet my family. Can't wait.

How to speak ZOMBIE
Rating 6/10 Age 8+

This is a book of how to speak the fascinating (and boring) language of zombie's. It is filled with gurgles and groans and moans. Mack also did this book so please check his out. Let's go to the world of the zombies.

Zombies are slow, dumb, but are extremely slow. If you don't want to be eaten, you should learn how to speak their language. This is a funny book like this line, "aaaaYYYrarhhhhmMUHHHTT?" stands for, "Can I borrow your yoga mat?" It is quite funny. There is no story to it, but it is quite entertaining. Now SSSSUuuuuwwwrrHHH (sit) and enjoy that book.

Best Super-power

People have been wandering what the best superpower is. There have been some for invisibility, flight and super strength. I believe that the best superpower is… getting anything you want from your hand.

With that superpower, you can summon anything you want! You can get a potion of invincibility, you can even get things that aren’t even in the galaxy yet! Of course, with this superpower, you can control the world. You can ask for infinite money and an army to take over an entire galaxy.

As you can see, this superpower can’t be overused (well, it can be. But it would just be O.P (over-powered).). Because what Spider-Man’s uncle said, “With great power, comes great responsibility”. If you have this power, use it all you want. But please don’t take over the universe.

P.S: If you liked this argument, please comment or tell me what your favourite super power is.

Dear Mrs Brown,

We are so excited for you to come

and we would love it if you came
back (which you are). See you
soon. And hope you healed over
time.

Do you want siblings or not?

Siblings are brothers and sisters who can play with you or annoy you a lot!!!! This is some persuasive writing for having siblings or not. Would you want a sibling?

Siblings can help you out with your chores, but you can get into quite an argument. They can play with you and have fun in the holidays with you, or you can be in a fight and not agree with other things. Siblings can be annoying to your friends, but you still have them, and you wouldn't let anyone be mean to your sibling.

Siblings can be annoying, but if you are older than them, they look up to you, and if you are younger than them, you look up to them. I think I would like a sibling, and I’m glad I do.

The Big Move

Marc is a 13 year old boy with an 8 year old sister called Katya. He doesn't want to move from Queensland to Melbourne, because over their he'll have no mates and no rugby team. In Melbourne, they have Aussie Rules, even though they live in Australia. Over in Melbourne, in his new school, he meets a girl named Lena and her little sister, Tisha. It is a story about Marc not wanting to move and he has to deal with all the new things in his life. I would rate this a 3/5 and for ages 5+.

Cats Or No Cats.

On this writing, we are trying to see whether we should ban cats or keep them. In my opinion, we should keep them.

Sure they kill native birds and other animals, but they balance the population of pests like possums. They also play with the children to take them off of electronics.

Another thing is that if we ban the cats, the stray cats who kill the most things can always come back, and the domestic ones can take territory so the strays can mark their territory. That is why I think we should keep cats.

P.S: Most of these ideas were giving to me by Mack. So I am really grateful for him giving me these ideas.

Book Review
Title: Shadows in the Ice.
Author: Des Hunt

"Shadows in the Ice" is the amazing sequel to the hit Frog Whistle Mine. Des Hunt wrote the second story starring Tony and Rose on another adventure near Fox Glacier. Tony used his detective skills to figure out another mystery with Rose helping him out with her cyber knowledge.

Tony meets a new friend and a new enemy in this story. There is murder, adventure and mystery in this awesome book. His new friend is a carcass cleaner named Murray, a kindhearted man who had a thing with birds. His most loyal bird is a kea named Kinky. Murray had a horrible accident when he shot something, but he thought he shot something else. Tony and Rose fly in to figure out what is going on in this town, and who to trust.

This story is just such a good story, that you can read it over and over again. But my advice is to first read the prequel "Frog Whistle Mine". Both stories is showing the life of Tony Hogan-White and his friend, Rose. Their adventures will always be stories to tell. I would rate it a 4/5.

Why I Should Be The New Rm 6 Librarian

I always wanted to be a student librarian. When I grow up, being a librarian would be my 2nd job. It just looks like such a great responsibility. Just look at all the books you can read and know and all the people that you can help. That is definitely the job for me.

I love to have a good challenge, and to try and succeed at all costs. I like seeing new faces and helping them out and making new friends. Sadly, I never got that chance. The only time I remember helping the library was to take the box filled with books to the library without even helping to use the computer. That was the last time I carried the box. And that was only when I was a Yr 3. My 1 and a half year of school. You wouldn’t want a 7 year old wait all the way to an 11 year old to do a job he/she always wanted and just let him/her sit there only to get 2 books, would you? That’s how I feel (not that you are mean or anything).

I am responsible, kind and hardworking. When I was in my old school at Newlands, I usually was the first one to finish and if the teacher was busy, I would mark the sheets since I got them all right. I helped my teacher to organise books and to clean up with the rest of my class. I know when to be a team and to work together. I love reading books and I’m a really good reader. I am quite patient and a humorous boy. I am also a good listener.

I wrote an article called “Temple Today, Gone Tomorrow” with an extra story in The Guardian. I love thinking ideas and brainstorming with other people. I would love to be a librarian. It looks absolutely awesome.
