Today I Practiced...

How to do equivalent fractions, for e.g 2/5 = 4/10. You're timesing both the numbers with the same number to do a bigger number but the same picture. It's quite easy if you think about. You can also divide them, like 8/14 = 4/7. You can keep halving them if you want. That is called simplifying.

Frog Whistle Mine

We have to do an activity for the story Frog Whistle Mine, and this is the post on Edmodo that I did for my prediction. "I haven't read the book but I think there is someone with a whistle inside a mine that attracts frogs, hence the name, Frog Whistle Mine."

Today I learnt...

What are ions. They help to create lightning for the ground and the clouds. In the clouds, they create negative energy, while at the ground the create positive. They are atoms/molecule with a net electrical charge due to loss or gain of one or more electrons.

Today I learnt...

Why lightning hits the Earth. Earth has ions that have positive energy while the clouds that created static electricity have negative electricity. The ions are like a battery where they're trying to connect. That's why some lightning bolts look like they come from the ground.
Today I learnt...

How lightning is made. It is an electrical current. Frozen raindrops bump into each other in the clouds. This creates an electrical charge. For a while, the cloud will be filled with electrical charges. This is the first part.

Today I learnt...

How to add 2 different fractions for e.g 3/4 + 2/5. You first have to times the denominators from the fractions e.g 4 x 5 = 20. There are 2 ways to do 20 with 4 and 5. 4 x 5 and 5 x 4. You need to times the 3 from 3/4 and times it by 5 which makes it 15. put the 15 and 20 together and you get 15/20. Then you times the 2 with 4 which gives you 8. Put it with 20 and you get 8/20. Add those 2 fractions together and you get 23/20. You can simplify that by 1 3/20.
Ordinary Day

Just an ordinary day.
The birds are singing.
The pets are sleeping.
My sister’s watching
TV with her pet
Hippopotamus.
The monsters are
Playing cards under
My bed.
The Alien landed
On my backyard and
Abducted our pet gerbil,
Fluffybuns the III.
Just an ordinary day.

Today I learnt...

How fast Mercury can go around the entire Sun. It goes as fast as 170,505 kilometers per hour! Look at my other Today I learnt to see how long it takes to go around the Sun. It's flipping fast!
Today I learnt...

How long a year is in Mercury compared to an Earth day. A Mercury year is 88 Earth days which means it goes scarily fast around the sun. The next Today I learnt will show how fast Mercury can go.
Today I learnt...

That Mercury has passed the face of the Sun. I looked this up on The Guardian if you want to know more. There is also a video that is simply breathtaking.

This is my Spelling Word Activity for Week 2 Term 2.

Today I learnt...

How to use a binary code. A binary code can have about 4 columns. 1 with 8 squares, one with 4, one with 2 and one with 1. If you want to show 12 in binary, you need to have, e.g 12 pennies. You need to use them one each column but there is a catch, you can only have full or empty columns, no half-filled. You can use the columns with 8 and 4 squares because they add up to 12. There can only be 1 solution. So in binary, 12 is on,on,off, off.
Beautiful NZ

Streams of glistening water,
Rivers of swimming fish against the current,
Urging to go on an adventure.
The bush filled with birds,
Singing their songs with voices like silk.
Mountains above the land below, watching
With snow white beards.
The clouds cover up Te Ra like he’s
Playing a game of Hide ‘n’ seek.
When he comes out, you can see the
Shimmering moana.
And the best of all,
Waikanae School.
Nga mokopuna o te ra nei, nga rangatira o apopo.
The children of today, are the leaders of tomorrow.

 Today I learnt...

How to do a Magic Square. This is how you use it. It can be 4 x 4 or bigger. They have a key like e.g 6 and the 4 numbers in a row, column and diagonal have to add up to 6.
Today I learnt...

How to do Reflection, Rotation and Translation. Translation stands for moving around the object left, right up or down. Or you can even move them right then down so they look like they are going in an angle. Rotation is turning the object in any direction like this "v" turns to the right "<". Reflection is flipping the object so it looks like its reflection.

Today I learnt...

How to use Reading Comprehension cards and recording it on a grid. The Reading Comprehension cards have stories on them and you have to answer 6 questions. We then write down the date and score and colour in the story you have done.

Soldier's Diary

Soldier's Diary

April 25th 1915.

We got our weapons and uniforms for the war. It feels horrible holding a gun to fight other people. Just horrible. Wait, I hear footsteps coming! Sorry, but this will be cut short.

Signed, Jack Nicholson

April 30th 1915

Ok, I'm back, but there isn't really much. Tomorrow, we're going to Gallipoli which is going to take eternity. The weather is nice New Zealand right now but I'm wondering how it'll be in Gallipoli.

Signed, Jack Nicholson

May 28th 1915

I think that we are in our trenches and the first thing that we saw were rats and flies coming at us like hosts. This looked like it would be a sewer 50 years from now. It had barbed wires quite nearby and we saw our enemies, the Turks. They snarled at us and swore at us. We did it back. I never felt the urge to kill a man before, but know I feel it.

Signed, Jack Nicholson

March 13th 1916

Sorry that I was late to make another piece. I lost my diary in the mud but luckily, one of my mate's found it. Sadly, he got shot by a sniper. We were given food that smelled and looked like cow pat. The flies enjoyed it, but we had to eat it. It went down the hatch and instantly came out the other end.

Signed, Jack Nicholson

March 15th 1916

This is the worst thing I've ever done. I would have been with my wife. I would have been with my daughter. There was a lot more to do but

"But what? What happened?" said a little girl in bed.
"Nothing else. Just blood." said a mother with a tear in her eye. "Well, let's go to bed." when she was about to turn off the light,
"Mom, who's Jack Nicholson?" asked the little girl.
"He was you're great-grandfather." answered the mum.
"I feel special." said the little girl. The mum giggled.
"You were always special, my little Poppy." and out went the light. All that was left was the rustle of the leaves and the breeze.
Today I have learnt...

How to you use hyperbole for poems and stories. It is like some type of exaggeration e.g "Relish (one of our class birds) screeched like a cannon shot in my ear."

Lest We Forget

 Lest We Forget
by Ivan F.D

"Bang!" go the rifles.
"Boom!" go the shells.
"Rat-a-tat-tat!" go the LMG's.
It's utter chaos. Bodies lying with open wounds
like glass. You can look into their soulless eyes.
Friends kneeling to their friends body, a tear going
down his face like a miniature river. He was soon filled with
woe and despair. He's been through too much. He stands at night,
holding a pistol, the image too gruesome to think. His grave
was washed with poppies and flowers and tears. Many saying,
"Lest we forget."
